What is a Mountain Challenge Girl? The phrase was coined after many conversations and experiences involving Mountain Challenge staff, athletes of all levels, and women from the College and the community. These women are assertive. They are dependable and independent. They are confident and steadfast. A group of more than 30 women have met and discussed their vision for Mountain Challenge Girls, and they are the inspiration for this program. Physical fitness is the goal, and whatever avenue it takes is encouraged. We want women to love what they do. We want girls to understand that being active IS attractive. Activity seems to be a childhood necessity, but when these young women “grow up” they are expected to play less and work more. Playing is simple, but has been sadly swallowed by homework and projects, computers and television. Mountain Challenge Girls is simply our avenue to fulfill our covenant: we are committed to promoting physical fitness and health in our community, particularly for women. We want to begin developing habits that lead to a healthy lifestyle. Participation in this unique program, will give young women a chance to be surrounded by a group of women who are committed to healthy living in all areas of their lives. It will group middle school girls with other young women their age in an environment where they can share their lives and learn together. We are outdoor-loving, fitness-driven people with a desire for young women to recognize the power that physical fitness can have in their own lives, enabling them to accomplish goals they felt were impossible, in exchange for a healthy life that exhibits strength and grace. All events will be facilitated through Mountain Challenge, but we would like the program to exist mostly within the individual as she walks through the woods, as she thinks about change, as she considers the other women in her group of friends. We like to think that this program is not a place or an event to add to your schedule, it is a lifestyle. It is not something that you fit in, it is what you do. You jump because you want to. You dance because you feel like it. You move because you can’t resist. |
